LAS CANDALISTAS FACT SHEET – 2013- 2014

Mission:  Las Candalistas is a philanthropic organization dedicated to benefitting children and the environment in the South Bay.

Background:    In 1967, a group of women formed Las Candalistas (“Candle Lighters”) to serve as a non-profit fundraising auxiliary of the Child Guidance Clinic of the South Bay Children’s Health Center.  Since its inception, the group has expanded and has now donated more than $2 million to numerous organizations that focus on helping children and/or the environment in the South Bay.  In 1989, our increasing success led Las Candalistas to become an independent philanthropic 501(c)(3) corporation.

Each year Las Candalistas receives applications for funds from 15-20 organizations. From that list, the membership votes to donate money to three primary charities, which may change each year. In addition to direct monetary grants, Las Candalistas collects and distributes food, clothing, educational materials and other essential items for our philanthropies throughout the year.

Members organize two fundraisers each year. The fall fundraiser, Entertaining for the Holidays, features presentations of holiday table décor, speakers on holiday topics, vendors, crafts and more. It takes place in late October. A spring fundraiser includes speakers on gardening and entertaining topics, a gourmet lunch, arts and crafts for sale, docents who explain the natural flora, fauna and history of the area, creative vendors and admission to a special site. For the past two years we have held the event at the Botanic Garden. This year we are holding our event in Portuguese Bend at the Catalina View Gardens, which beautifully displays the splendor of our natural surroundings.

2013-2014 Charities:  In the fall of 2013, Las Candalistas selected the following philanthropies to receive the proceeds from the 2013-14 fund raising events:

Harbor Interfaith Services—HIS Kid’s Club supporting after-school and preschool programs for the homeless children in their care.

Pediatric Therapy Network—Camp Escapades, a high-quality, safe and therapeutic camp experience for children with special needs.

Marine Mammal Care Center—part-time education coordinator allowing the center to continue on-site marine science programs with LAUSD students.

Our 46th annual spring fundraising event is called The History and Mystery of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2014.

Las Candalistas is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) California corporation Tax I.D. #95-4270483.
